Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bandajlanmasıyla oluşan güdük polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız kalıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok skorda polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Omurga ayrım peptitlerin güdük, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, vesair amino asite daimî, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bandajlanır. Polipeptid mimarisına zalimlan amino asitlerin her biri mimariya peptid bandajlarıyla bandajlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir akarsu çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine zalimlan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, özgür amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin vesair ucundaki özgür α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
